It’s here again.  Hurricane Season.  It seems it is the one thing about everyone in Florida has something to say.  I notice this year, people are not dwelling on it, even though we already had our first storm back in June.  Personally, I am happy it is not the constant topic of years past.  This is not to say it is not serious.  I doubt anyone that lived here in 2004 cannot help but take hurricanes seriously.  Thought it is nice not to have it constantly placed in your face.

I do not get too worked up over the predictions of how bad the Season is going to be.  It does not matter if there is five or twenty five storms.  It only matters where the storms go.  Of course, the official source for hurricanes is the National Hurricane Center website.

So, what to do?  The Rule of Thumb is: Run from the Water, and Hide from the Wind.  Here in Central Florida, we do not have much water to worry about.  Crooked Lake is a pretty big lake, but I doubt we will get much of a storm surge from it.  It is the wind we have to worry about.  Hurricane Charlie gave us winds over 100 mph.  And every hurricane spawns tornados.

Look at your home.  Is it out of concrete block?  Or is it a trailer?  It is up to you to decide if you need to hunker down or run for a shelter.  You can find Polk County shelter information here.

Let’s all keep hoping and praying this is another quiet year.
