As part of our emergency preparations, I picked up a couple backpacks at Walmart for $29. They were truly an impulse buy because they were exactly what I was looking for. I found them in the automobile section called “Motorcycle Backpacks” made by Fieldline. They are designed to strap on to the sissy bar on the back of the seat. Ironically, my Honda does not have a sissy bar, but a hardcase trunk.
I wanted the backpacks for our 72-hour emergency kits. TS Bonnie reminded me how important they are. Back in August 2004, a friend was living in Punta Gorda. Fortunately, he was watching the news when Hurricane Charley made a right turn and headed for their house. Gary, his wife and dog only had a few minutes to grab things and run. Within the hour, there were 110+ mph winds in their neighborhood. This is a medium size backpack: 21”x15”x8.5” or 3,520 cu. in. There are two side pouches and a separate compartment in the flap. It also comes with an internal frame to help keep it stiff and carry the weight. It also has two handles, one on the back, one on the top, to help with loading into a vehicle. There is no waist belt, so it would get very, very heavy after a while. Once I get the kits packed, I will post what I was able to get in it. If you want a better description, there is a great episode at The Survival Podcast on Bug-Out-Bags. You can email me with This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Well, we got brushed by our first storm this year. Tropical Storm Bonnie came through the Keys. She only left an inch of rain for us, according to my rain gauge. It was not a serious event (they did not even evacuate the Keys) but it is a good reminder of what can happen.
