Happy Anniversary!  It was six years ago, on Friday, August 13, 2004 when Hurricane Charley came ripping across the state of Florida, and made a huge mess in our lives here in Calusa Commons.  Anniversaries are times of reflection and examination.  Looking back, there are a lot of lessons we can take from that Friday the 13th.

For those of us that were here, it was a weekend we will never forget.  Starting at Punta Gorda, it moved straight up US 17 until it got to Fort Meade.  Turning right, it passed over our neighborhoods on the way to Orlando and Daytona Beach.  It caused more than $13 billion dollars of damage and nine people lost their lives in the state of Florida.

Let’s look at how some of the Elements for a Resilient Community were impacted.

Treason PDF Print E-mail

Recently, a certain website posted more than ninety thousand classified documents and reports from the Afghan war effort.  (To paraphrase the great Paul Harvey: I am sure they would like me to link to their site)  The only thing comparable to this was the release of the Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam War.

Personally, I am disappointed in the “lack of reaction” in the American Mass Media.  If it was not for the internet bloggers and foreign media, this story would wither and die.  The public is led to believe the troubles of Lindsey Lohan are more important than our soldiers in a foreign land.

There are a couple things that do trouble me about this that no one has mentioned.

It’s here again.  Hurricane Season.  It seems it is the one thing about everyone in Florida has something to say.  I notice this year, people are not dwelling on it, even though we already had our first storm back in June.  Personally, I am happy it is not the constant topic of years past.  This is not to say it is not serious.  I doubt anyone that lived here in 2004 cannot help but take hurricanes seriously.  Thought it is nice not to have it constantly placed in your face.

Is there a country that needed an earthquake LESS than Haiti?  The people were so poor they were actually eating dirt!  Watching the news, you realize how close to disaster these people were living before the quake hit.  Perhaps the best we can do is to draw any lessons from their experience.  One thing that stands out is how long they had to wait until help could arrive.  We saw this after Hurricane Katrina.  We saw this after Hurricanes Charlie, Francis and Jeane came through our neighborhoods.  Help is not sitting down the road, waiting.  In the immediate aftermath, you are on your own.

Baking Bread PDF Print E-mail

Lately, I am slowing getting into baking our own bread.  It was actually not as hard as I thought it would be.  I follow a recipe off the Food Network by Alton Brown.  It is pretty simple.  The only change I made was reducing the temperature to 390 degrees and the cooking time to 50 minutes. (I recommend anyone trying this also checking out the two videos on you tube.)
